Chapter 7 - The Hidden Medical Ledger

"Read it aloud, Matteo," I ordered, my voice dropping into a register that made my own guards flinch. "Read the names of the patients and the dates of the deposits."
Matteo cleared his throat, his eyes darting toward Dante with pure murder in his gaze. "The primary subject listed in the biological ledger is... Signor Marco D’Angelo. Your elder brother in Geneva."
My heart stopped for a single, agonizing beat. My brother, Marco, had been living in seclusion at a private Swiss medical facility for the past eleven months, suffering from what the finest neurologists in Europe had diagnosed as a rare, rapidly progressing degenerative motor-neuron disease. I had spent millions on his care, flying in specialists from Boston and Tokyo, watching helplessly as the man who had raised me withered away in a wheelchair.
"The entries," Matteo continued, his voice hardening, "detail bi-weekly administration of a synthesized heavy-metal neurotoxin, introduced directly into Signor Marco’s routine IV nutrient bags by a compromised nurse on Dante's payroll. The exact timeline of his physical decline matches the dosage increments recorded here to the day."
A collective gasp of horror escaped Elena, who pressed her hands over little Mia’s ears to shield her from the darkness unfolding in the room.
"And there is a secondary log, Boss," Matteo said, his eyes locking onto mine. "Beginning four months ago. The subject listed is... you. Micro-dosages of the same tasteless compound, scheduled to be introduced into your morning espresso reserves here at the Amalfi estate. Designed to cause sudden cognitive disorientation and cardiac failure within six months—styled to look like a natural genetic aneurysm."
I felt the cold steel of my gun vibrate slightly in my hand as the entire architecture of the betrayal laid itself bare before me.
"And the payments?" I asked quietly.
"Two hundred thousand euros deposited on the first of every month into a shell account in the Cayman Islands," Matteo read, flipping to the financial slips stapled to the back of the ledger. "Originating from a maritime holding firm registered in Limassol... owned by Anton Petrov."
Everything clicked into place with the devastating precision of a sniper's bullet.

Petrov had never intended to finalize the two-hundred-and-fifty-million-euro harbor deal in Monte Carlo. The entire nine-month negotiation had been an elaborate, theatrical distraction—a massive financial lure designed to keep my attention fixed on international shipping lanes while Dante systematically poisoned my bloodline from within. Once my brother was dead and I suffered a sudden 'fatal aneurysm' during a high-stress negotiation, Dante would assume control of the D'Angelo empire as my loyal successor, handing the southern ports over to the Russian syndicate on a silver platter.
And Elena—an innocent housekeeper simply doing her job—had stumbled upon the physical evidence of their treason three days before the final blow was meant to be struck.
