Chapter 4 - The Ambush

Two days later, I was back at work. I needed the routine. The ER was my kingdom; it was the only place where the chaos made sense.
I was at the nurse's station charting a patient when the double doors of the waiting room burst open.
Julian stormed in, looking unkempt and frantic. He marched straight past the triage desk, ignoring the protests of the receptionists.
"Where is she?" he yelled. "Where is my wife?"
I stood up slowly, handing my clipboard to Sarah. The entire ER went dead silent. Doctors, nurses, and orderlies all turned to watch.
"Julian," I said, my voice echoing in the quiet trauma bay. "You are violating hospital protocol. Step back behind the yellow line."
"Don't give me your sterile, doctor tone!" he shouted, pointing a finger at me. "You locked me out of the bank accounts! My card declined at the grocery store today! You can't just steal my money and take my daughter!"
"It was my money, Julian. You haven't held a steady job in two years," I said calmly, crossing my arms. "And as for Maya, my lawyer informed you that you have supervised visitation rights. You chose not to show up yesterday."
"I was busy!" he spat.
"With Chloe?" I asked, loud enough for the entire staff to hear. "Is her apartment treating you well? The one I inadvertently paid for?"
Whispers broke out among the nurses. Sarah was smirking.
Julian’s face turned bright red. "You vindictive witch! I am going to ruin you! I'll tell the medical board you're unstable!" He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist over the counter.
He didn't even have time to blink.
Three male trauma nurses and two security guards descended on him like a pack of wolves. They pinned him to the linoleum floor, wrenching his arms behind his back.
"Code Gray," I said calmly to the intercom operator. "We have a hostile trespasser in Bay 4."

"Get your hands off me!" Julian screamed as they dragged him out the doors. "You're going to pay for this!"
I picked up my clipboard, my hand completely steady. "Sarah, what's the status on the appendix in Bed 3?"
