Chapter 9 - The Masterpiece

Weeks turned into months. Clara’s apartment lease was up, but she didn’t renew it. She didn’t have to. The bags she had packed on the night of the broken window never left my house.
Winter thawed into spring, and the property bloomed with life. Clara planted a garden in the backyard. Lily’s laughter became the soundtrack of my days. My house had transformed from a monument of grief into a living, breathing home.
I spent the evenings in my woodshop, working on a secret project.
It took me four hundred hours. I sourced the finest cherry wood, sanding it until it was as smooth as glass. I built a custom bed for Lily. But it wasn't just a bed. I carved the headboard into the shape of the solar system. Every planet was meticulously etched, with Jupiter featuring a swirled grain of wood for the red spot. Above the planets, I embedded tiny, glow-in-the-dark resin stars, mapping out the exact constellations that were in the sky on the night I met them at the Copper Kettle.
On Lily's sixth birthday, I brought them into the shop and pulled the tarp off.
Lily gasped, dropping her stuffed dinosaur. She ran her tiny hands over the carved wood. "Jupiter!" she squealed. "And the stars! Julian, it’s a spaceship bed!"
"It's all yours, kiddo," I smiled, my heart expanding until it physically ached.
Clara stood beside me, tears streaming down her face. She reached out, taking my rough, calloused hand in hers.
"You built her a universe," she whispered.
"She already had a universe," I replied, pulling Clara close. "I just built her a place to sleep in it."
Later that night, after Lily had exhausted herself playing in her new bed and fallen asleep, Clara and I sat on the back porch, watching the fireflies dance in the warm evening air.

"Julian," Clara said softly, resting her head on my shoulder. "You saved us. I don't know how I'll ever repay you."
"You already have," I said. "You brought me back to life, Clara. I was a ghost before you walked into that diner."
