Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Door

The color drained from Elena’s face so fast her makeup looked like chalk on canvas. Julian leaned forward, placing both elbows on the table, his friendly demeanor evaporating into something hard and threatening.

“Listen to me, Marcus,” Julian growled, his voice dropping an octave. “You’ve been out of the country for four years. You don't know what’s been happening here. Elena has been breaking her back keeping this family afloat while you were off playing computers in the sand. Now stop being paranoid, pick up the pen, and sign the damn papers so we can move on.”

“And if I don't?” I asked, leaning back in my chair, folding my arms across my chest.

Elena slammed her hands on the table, standing up so violently her wine glass tipped over, spilling dark red liquid across the white linen tablecloth like a bloodstain. “You are not going to ruin my life, Marcus! I spent four years rotting in this house with that crazy old woman! I deserve this house! I deserve that money! You will sign it right now, or I swear to God I will call my lawyer and take half of everything you own in a divorce!”

“You won't need a divorce lawyer, Elena,” I said quietly. “You’re going to need a criminal defense attorney.”

Before she could scream another word, three sharp, authoritative knocks echoed through the house from the front door. Bang. Bang. Bang.

Julian jumped up, scowling. “Who the hell is that? Did you order something?”

“No,” Elena whispered, her eyes darting toward the foyer in sudden panic. “I didn't order anything.”

“I’ll get it,” I said smoothly, pushing my chair back and walking toward the entrance.

I opened the heavy front door. Standing on the porch was Inspector Vance, a tall, veteran detective with graying hair and eyes that had seen too much human greed. Behind him stood four uniformed tactical officers from the city police department, their hands resting securely on their utility belts.

“Evening, Mr. Vance,” Inspector Vance said, nodding at me. “We received your secure transmission. Is the residence secure?”

“They’re in the dining room, Inspector,” I replied, stepping aside to let the blue uniforms flood into the hallway. “Right on time.”
