Chapter 5 - Meeting the Heirs

With the toxic presence of the Blackwoods finally eradicated from my life, the air in the suite felt pure. I took a deep, cleansing breath, feeling a strength I hadn't known I possessed settling into my bones.
"Well handled," Harrison said, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth.
A gentle knock brought my attention to the door. A team of neonatal nurses walked in, pushing two state-of-the-art transparent incubators.
My breath hitched. All the anger, all the vengeance, washed away in an instant, replaced by an overwhelming wave of pure, unadulterated love.
"They are doing incredibly well, Ms. Davenport," the head nurse smiled, using my maiden name with ease. "Their vitals are strong enough for some skin-to-skin."
Victor gently helped me adjust my posture as the nurses carefully lifted the tiny, fragile bundles. They placed my son on my chest first, followed by my daughter. They were so incredibly small, wrapped in soft white blankets, but they were perfect. Tiny hands, little button noses, and a fierce will to survive that they clearly inherited from the Davenport bloodline.
Tears streamed silently down my face as I kissed their soft heads.
"Welcome to the world, Leo," I whispered to my son. "Welcome, Aria," I murmured to my daughter.
Harrison stood over us, his stern eyes glistening with unshed tears. He reached out a trembling finger, and tiny Leo instinctively wrapped his hand around it.
"They will never know a day of fear, Evelyn," Harrison vowed, his voice thick with emotion. "They will never know want, and they will never know the kind of cruelty you endured. They are Davenports."
I looked up at Victor, who was standing by the door, watching the scene with a fierce, protective stance.
"Victor," I said softly.
He stepped forward. "Yes, ma'am?"
"I want you to be their godfather," I said, looking him directly in the eyes. "You saved their lives today. You saved mine. I want you to head their personal detail. I trust no one else."
Victor, a man who had seen war zones and corporate espionage without blinking, looked visibly moved. He bowed his head slightly.

"It would be the greatest honor of my life, Ms. Davenport. I will protect them with my last breath."
Sitting there, holding my beautiful children, surrounded by a grandfather who adored me and a protector who would die for me, I realized something profound. Garrett hadn't broken me today. He had merely shattered the disguise I was wearing. The timid girl on the rug was dead. The matriarch of the next generation had been born.
