Elias let me stay at his main property, a heavily fortified compound closer to the city.

For three weeks, I healed.

I ate venison, rebuilt my strength, and let the clean Alaskan air clear my lungs.

Titan never left my side, his coat regaining its shine, his eyes sharp.

Vance kept me updated.

Julian had filed the insurance claim.

Because of his pristine public image and the "tragic" circumstances, the life insurance company was fast-tracking the payout.

A memorial service was scheduled for the upcoming Friday—exactly one month after he left me to die.

"He's going to get the check on Friday afternoon," Vance told me over the secure line.

"The memorial is his final public performance before he cashes out and clears his debts."

"Where is the service?" I asked.

"The Anchorage Grand Hotel.

Ballroom A.

He went all out."

I looked down at my hands.

The frostbite had peeled, leaving raw, pink skin, but my grip was strong.
