Chapter 4 - The Lion's Den

The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was suffocating in its opulence. Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over the city’s elite. At the center of the room, holding court with a glass of champagne, was Victoria Sterling. Standing beside her, looking smug and predatory, was Arthur Vance.

When the master of ceremonies announced the new arrivals, the room’s ambient chatter ceased.

"Mr. Julian Thorne… and his fiancée, Miss Clara Navarro."

Victoria’s champagne flute shattered on the marble floor.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea as Julian and Clara descended the grand staircase. Julian’s hand was a warm, anchoring weight at the small of Clara’s back. Camera flashes erupted from the press pit.

Clara kept her chin high, her face a mask of serene superiority. She walked straight toward her stepmother.

Victoria’s face was completely drained of color. She looked like she had seen a ghost. Vance, beside her, was sweating profusely.

"Clara," Victoria choked out, her carefully crafted smile trembling wildly. "You’re… you’re here."

"Hello, Victoria," Clara purred, her voice dripping with venom. "I hear you’ve been looking for me. But as you can see, I’ve been somewhat… preoccupied."

She casually raised her left hand to adjust Julian’s lapel, letting the massive diamond catch the chandelier's light.

Arthur Vance took a step back, recognizing the apex predator in the room. "Thorne. What is the meaning of this?"

Julian stepped slightly in front of Clara, his presence dominating the space. "It means, Arthur, that the young woman you locked in a bedroom four nights ago is now my future wife. It also means that I am auditing the Sterling estate. Every penny Victoria owes me will be extracted. Starting tomorrow, your proposed merger is dead. And so are your reputations."

Victoria lunged forward in a desperate panic, abandoning her socialite facade. "Julian, please! She’s lying! The girl is unhinged, she—"

Julian didn't raise his voice, but the sheer lethal intent in his eyes made Victoria freeze in her tracks.

"Address my fiancée with that tone again," Julian whispered, loud enough for the surrounding socialites to hear, "and I will buy the bank that holds the mortgage on your life, and I will evict you into the street."
