Chapter 13 - The Queen of the Boardroom

Three hours later, the forty-fifth-floor boardroom of the Apex Building was a scene of absolute, paralyzed shock.

Twenty senior directors, institutional shareholders, and executive vice presidents sat around the massive mahogany table, their tablets buzzing with breaking news alerts regarding the FBI raid on David Vance’s penthouse and his subsequent arrest for attempted murder. At the far end of the table sat Victoria Sterling’s father—a red-faced banking magnate named Arthur Sterling—who was pounding his fist on the polished wood.

"This is an institutional catastrophe!" Arthur Sterling roared to the nervous board members. "The stock is halted on the exchange! The COO is in federal custody, the general counsel has turned state's witness, and we haven't seen Julian Vance in a corporate setting in three months! I am calling for an immediate vote of emergency governance! We must appoint an independent interim CEO before the SEC freezes our trading licenses!"

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open with a crash.

Julian Vance walked into the room. He wasn't leaning on a cane; he wasn't wearing medical telemetry monitors; he was dressed in a pristine, bespoke three-piece suit, walking with an aggressive, towering stride that radiated absolute, undisputed mastery of his empire.

And walking two steps behind his right shoulder—not wearing gray janitorial clothes or navy scrubs, but dressed in an exquisite, tailored navy executive dress and carrying an encrypted iPad—was Clara Hayes.

The entire boardroom fell dead silent. Even Arthur Sterling froze mid-sentence, his mouth dropping open as Julian walked directly to the head of the table, placed his hands flat on the mahogany, and leaned forward to survey the frozen executives.

"Good afternoon, gentlemen," Julian said, his voice echoing coldly across the room. "I understand there are questions regarding the stability of Vance Global’s leadership following the termination of my brother's employment this morning."

He didn't wait for a response. He tapped a command on his phone, sending a digital document instantly to every tablet around the table.

"What you are looking at is my full, certified medical discharge from the chief of cardiology at Swedish Medical Center, alongside an independent physiological evaluation conducted by Johns Hopkins," Julian continued cleanly. "My coronary artery is operating at one hundred percent capacity. My blood pressure is normal. My cognitive processing is, as David discovered this morning, entirely unimpaired. I am officially resuming full, active operational control of Vance Global as Chairman and CEO, effective immediately."

Arthur Sterling scrambled to his feet, pointing a trembling finger at Clara. "And what is she doing here, Julian? You bring your... your hired domestic handler into a closed board meeting? She is a security risk! She has no executive standing!"

Julian slowly straightened his posture, turning his head to look at Arthur Sterling with a gaze so lethal it made several adjacent board members instinctively push their chairs backward away from the banker.

"This is Clara Hayes," Julian stated, his voice ringing through the boardroom with absolute, unshakeable authority. "She is the woman whose medical expertise and analytical brilliance saved my life during my cardiac arrest, uncovered the accounting anomalies David used to fund his pharmaceutical tampering, and coordinated the federal sting that preserved this company’s integrity today."

Julian reached out, taking Clara’s hand in front of the entire assembly of billionaires and directors, pulling her smoothly to his side so she stood shoulder-to-shoulder with him at the head of the table.

"Furthermore," Julian announced, his lips curving into a proud, triumphant smile as he looked down at her, "as of ten o'clock this morning, she is no longer my medical technician. She is my wife-to-be. And upon completion of her executive MBA program—which Vance Global is sponsoring—she will be assuming the newly created role of Executive Vice President of Corporate Risk and Internal Compliance. Anyone who questions her presence, her authority, or her standing in this building can submit their resignation to my desk before five o'clock today. Otherwise, sit down, shut up, and open your Q1 projection ledgers."

Not a single man around the table moved a muscle to resign. Arthur Sterling slowly, humiliatingly sank back into his leather chair, his face pale as he broke eye contact and stared down at his tablet.

Julian turned his head toward Clara, winking softly as he pulled her chair out at the head of the table right next to his own.

"Take a seat, Executive Vice President," Julian whispered for her ears alone as she sat down, her head held high, her eyes shining with brilliant, fearless confidence. "Let’s show them how we run this empire."
