Chapter 3 - The Lawyer’s Letter

By the end of the week, the financial bleeding had turned into a full-blown hemorrhage.
Daniel sat in his home office, staring at a stack of past-due notices that seemed to multiply overnight.
The private school where his children attended had called three times about the bounced tuition check.
His country club membership had been suspended due to non-payment.
Claire was barely speaking to him, spending her days locked in the master bedroom making furious phone calls to her parents.
In a desperate, foolish attempt to regain control, Daniel hired a sleazy lawyer using the last bit of credit he had left.
He thought he could scare his mother into opening the financial floodgates again.
On a cold Tuesday morning, Margaret received a thick, certified envelope in the mail.
She sat at her kitchen island, sliced the envelope open with a silver letter opener, and read the document.
It was a legal demand letter, filled with empty threats about "verbal contracts" and "promised financial support."
Daniel was actually trying to sue her for cutting off his allowance.
Margaret let out a soft, elegant laugh that echoed in the empty kitchen.
She didn't feel angry, she just felt a deep, overwhelming pity for his stupidity.
She picked up her phone and dialed the number of Arthur Sterling, the most ruthless corporate attorney in the state.
“Margaret, my dear,” Arthur’s deep voice boomed through the speaker.
“Arthur, I need you to do a bit of housekeeping for me,” Margaret said, smoothing out the letter.
“My son seems to think he has a legal right to my estate.”
Arthur chuckled darkly on the other end of the line.
“Shall I send him the reality check, or the financial guillotine?”
“Both,” Margaret replied, her voice turning to pure ice.
“I want every trust, every will, and every inheritance document rewritten today.”
“I want Daniel completely removed from my estate.”
“And Arthur?” she added, staring out the window at the snow.
“Make sure the grandchildren’s college funds are placed in a blind trust that Daniel and Claire can never, ever touch.”
Within twenty-four hours, Daniel received Arthur’s response via a terrifyingly formal courier.
Daniel opened the heavy black folder, his hands shaking violently as he read the legal jargon.
The letter systematically dismantled every single ridiculous claim his cheap lawyer had made.
It legally barred him from entering Margaret’s property.
But the final paragraph was the one that made Daniel collapse into his desk chair in tears.
It officially notified him that he had been entirely disinherited.
The billions of dollars he had always counted on inheriting were gone, donated entirely to charity and educational trusts.
He had traded his entire future for one night of arrogant, drunken cruelty on Christmas Eve.
When Claire walked into the office and read the letter over his shoulder, she didn't scream.

She just packed a suitcase and took the children to her parents' house.
Daniel was left completely alone in a massive house he could no longer afford.
