Chapter 6 - The Football Team’s Verdict
By Wednesday morning, the social fallout from the Labor Day cookout had officially erupted beyond the boundaries of our family circle and spilled directly into the suburban community of Oakridge. Gavin Montgomery’s identity was entirely built around his status as the starting varsity defensive linebacker for the Oakridge High Eagles. He wore his varsity jacket like a crown, and Derek had spent years grooming him to believe that being a star athlete made him immune to the rules that governed ordinary people.
That crown was forcibly stripped from him before the first bell rang for first period.
I learned about what happened through an unexpected phone call from Coach Henderson, the head varsity football coach at Oakridge High. Henderson was the same man who had suspended Gavin earlier in the season for attempting to injure a teammate during a scrimmage—only to be bullied into silence when Derek threatened the school board with a lawsuit.
"David?" Coach Henderson’s voice was heavy over the phone. "I’m calling to check on Iris. I heard about the surgery from one of the parents on the booster club. How is she?"
"She’s in a lot of pain, Coach, but she’s tough," I replied. "Why are you calling me, Henderson? Derek told everyone you were backing Gavin up."
"Derek is a liar," Henderson spat, genuine anger vibrating in his voice. "I wanted to cut that kid from my roster back in October when he gave Jimmy Vance a concussion after the whistle. Derek brought two lawyers to the superintendent's office and claimed I was discriminating against an 'aggressive athlete.' My hands were tied by the district bureaucracy."
"And now?" I asked.
"Now, the district bureaucracy is running for cover," Henderson said grimly. "That security video from your parents' patio got leaked to the high school parent-teacher WhatsApp group last night. By six o'clock this morning, my inbox was flooded with over eighty emails from parents demanding that Gavin be removed from the school. Half the varsity roster went to the principal’s office before first period and stated they would boycott Friday night’s homecoming game if Gavin was allowed to dress out."
I felt a cold surge of vindication. "What did the school do?"
"The principal called Gavin and Derek into the administrative office at eight o'clock," Henderson explained. "They didn't just kick him off the football team, David. The disciplinary board voted unanimously for an immediate, indefinite suspension pending an expulsion hearing for violent conduct. They stripped him of his varsity letters, emptied his locker, and had the campus resource officer escort him and his father off school property in front of the entire student body."

"How did Derek take it?"
Coach Henderson let out a dark laugh. "He went completely unhinged. He tried to scream at the principal, claiming you had edited the video to ruin his son's scouting prospects. He actually threatened to sue the entire football booster club for defamation. But nobody was listening to him anymore. The college scouts from Michigan State and Ohio Who were supposed to attend Friday’s game? They formally rescinded their preliminary interest letters by ten o'clock this morning. Gavin’s football career is over."
