Chapter 1 - The Metal Case

The silence in the banquet hall was so heavy it felt like it was crushing my chest.
Not a single person among the one hundred guests dared to move or speak.
My father stood frozen by his gold retirement banner, his face completely drained of color.
Natalie lowered her arm, the malicious triumph finally fading from her eyes as she stared at the federal investigator.
The investigator was a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark suit who introduced himself as Agent Harris.
Beside him stood Dr. Evans, the man who had held my hand through three years of agonizing fertility treatments.
Dr. Evans looked terrified, sweating profusely under the bright ballroom lights.
He clutched the locked metal case to his chest as if it were a shield.
"Grace," Dr. Evans said, his voice trembling so violently that the microphone on the nearby podium picked it up.
"I am so incredibly sorry."
Luke stepped in front of me, his body rigid with protective fury.
"What is going on here?" Luke demanded, his voice echoing across the silent room.
"Why is the man who failed to help my wife get pregnant walking in here with a federal agent?"
Agent Harris flashed his badge toward my father, then turned his stern gaze to Natalie.
"Natalie Vance, you are the primary beneficiary of the shell accounts tied to this insurance agency," Agent Harris stated clearly.
Natalie took a step backward, bumping into a table of champagne glasses that rattled dangerously.
"I don't know what you are talking about," she lied, her voice pitching high with sudden panic.
"I just ran the marketing department."
Agent Harris ignored her and gestured for Dr. Evans to place the metal case on the nearest table.
With shaking hands, the doctor entered a four-digit code and popped the latches.
Inside the case were dozens of thick, blue medical files, each one bearing the logo of his private fertility clinic.
"For the past four years, this agency has been writing fraudulent, high-premium insurance policies for deceased individuals," Agent Harris explained to the room.
"But the money wasn't just being pocketed."
He pulled out the top file and opened it, revealing a photograph of me.
"The stolen funds were being used to finance a black-market medical ring."
My heart stopped beating for what felt like an eternity.
"What kind of medical ring?" Luke asked, grabbing my hand so tightly his knuckles turned white.
Agent Harris looked directly at me with a mixture of pity and professional detachment.
"They were harvesting genetic material, Grace."
"Your sister wasn't just stealing money."
"She was using the fake insurance policies to secretly pay Dr. Evans for extra, undocumented egg retrievals during your treatments."
The room spun violently.
"No," I gasped, leaning heavily against Luke to keep from collapsing to the floor.

"Every time you were put under anesthesia for a procedure, he took more than he reported," Agent Harris continued relentlessly.
"And your sister sold your viable embryos to wealthy clients who wanted guaranteed genetics from a brilliant, healthy attorney."
