Chapter 1 - The Poisoned Truth

Leo leaned in so close I could feel his breath shaking against my collarbone.

"Daddy," he whispered, his voice cracking with a terror no child should ever know.

"She put the bad white powder in your espresso."

"Elena saw her do it."

"That is why Mommy made the police take her away."

My blood turned to absolute ice.

Every single muscle in my body paralyzed as the weight of my seven-year-old’s words crashed over me.

Suddenly, the blinding migraines I had been suffering from for the past three weeks made horrifying sense.

The chronic fatigue, the dizzy spells during board meetings, the strange metallic aftertaste in my morning coffee.

I hadn't been overworking myself.

My gorgeous, flawless wife had been slowly poisoning me.

I pulled Leo tight against my chest, burying my face in his soft hair so he wouldn't see the murderous rage flashing in my eyes.

"Daddy believes you, Leo," I murmured gently into his ear.

"I need you and Julian to be very brave for me now."

"Do not tell Mommy what you just told me."

Julian looked up from his mug, his face stained with tears, and gave me a tiny, trembling nod.

I took their mugs of hot cocoa, walked straight to the kitchen sink, and poured them down the drain.

If Victoria was willing to poison me, I could no longer trust a single thing consumed in this house.

I wiped the counter clean, my mind racing through a million terrifying scenarios.

I was Arthur Sterling, a man who controlled a billion-dollar hospitality empire.

I crushed ruthless competitors before breakfast.

Yet, I had been completely blind to the viper sleeping in my own bed.

The soft click of designer heels echoing from the hallway snapped me back to reality.

Victoria glided into the kitchen, her phone tucked away, looking like an angel carved from marble.

"Are the boys feeling better?" she asked, her voice dripping with fake maternal concern.

"They are just exhausted," I lied smoothly, forcing a strained smile.

"It was a traumatic afternoon for everyone."

"I will take them up to bed."

Victoria stepped forward and placed her manicured hand on my chest, right over my violently pounding heart.

"You look terribly pale, Arthur," she cooed softly.

"Let me make you a fresh espresso."

"You need your strength."

I looked deep into her beautiful, hollow eyes and felt a sickening wave of revulsion.

"No thank you, darling," I replied evenly.

"I think I just need some sleep."

I grabbed my sons by their hands and walked up the grand staircase, knowing that a lethal game of chess had just begun.

And I fully intended to destroy her.
