Chapter 10 - The Beautiful Future

Two years passed in the blink of an eye.

I stood on the stage of the university auditorium, wearing a black graduation gown and a brightly colored velvet hood.

I was graduating with my Master's Degree in Architecture, finishing at the very top of my class.

The dean called my name, and I walked across the stage to receive my diploma.

The applause from the audience was absolutely deafening.

I looked out into the front row and saw the family I had chosen and fought for.

Arthur was standing up, clapping proudly and wiping tears from his eyes with a silk handkerchief.

Mason was standing right beside him, holding a massive bouquet of yellow roses and cheering at the top of his lungs.

There were no toxic relatives waiting to steal my joy.

There were no lies, no hidden agendas, and no stolen funds.

After the ceremony, we went to a beautiful, private dinner at one of the best restaurants in the city.

Arthur raised his glass of champagne to make a toast.

“To my beautiful, brilliant granddaughter,” Arthur beamed, his eyes shining with pride.

“You took the darkest hand fate could deal, and you turned it into a masterpiece.”

“We love you, Claire.”

“I love you too,” I replied, clinking my glass against theirs.

The next morning, I packed my bags and drove back to the Vermont lake house.

It was no longer just a summer retreat; it was my permanent home and the headquarters for my new architectural firm.

I had designed and built a beautiful studio attached to the side of the house, overlooking the peaceful water.

I walked into my studio, smelling the scent of fresh pine and drafting paper.

I sat down at my massive wooden desk and unrolled the blueprints for my very first solo project.

It was a design for a new children’s center in the city, funded entirely by the Bennett family trust.

I picked up my favorite drafting pencil and began to draw.

The trauma of my past would always be a part of my story, but it no longer defined me.

I was the author of my own life now, and every line I drew belonged entirely to me.

The sun shone brightly through the glass windows, warming my skin.

May you like

I smiled, feeling completely and utterly at peace.

The future was finally mine.
