Chapter 8 - The Arrest

Before Eleanor could lower her pointing finger, the heavy oak front door of our house was violently breached from the outside. The sound of heavy tactical boots thundered across the hardwood floor of the foyer as three uniformed police officers and Detective Evans flooded into the living room, their badges gleaming under the recessed lighting.

"Police! Nobody move!" Detective Evans barked, her hand resting firmly on the holster at her hip as she flanked Eleanor from the left. "Eleanor Vance, step away from your son and place your hands where I can see them right now!"

Eleanor spun around, her mouth dropping open in shock as she took in the sight of the law enforcement officers surrounding her. The arrogant color drained from her face instantly, leaving her skin a ghastly, translucent white. She stumbled backward, bumping her knees against the edge of the coffee table.

"What... what is the meaning of this?" Eleanor stammered, her voice skyrocketing into a panicked, high-pitched register as she looked desperately toward Julian. "Julian! Tell them to get out of your house! Why are the police here?"

Julian didn't move an inch to help her. He stood entirely still, looking down at his mother with an expression of profound, unshakeable disgust.

"They aren't here for Clara, Mom," Julian said quietly. "They’re here for you."

I pushed open the door of the upstairs laundry closet, walked down the carpeted staircase, and stepped into the living room. I stopped beside my husband, wrapping my fingers around his forearm. Julian immediately reached out, pulling me close against his side, his arm forming a protective barrier between me and the woman who had tried to destroy our lives.

When Eleanor saw me standing there, unharmed, un-evicted, and standing in unified solidarity with her son, the full realization of the trap finally hit her. Her eyes darted wildly between the hidden camera on the bookshelf, my secondary phone, and Detective Evans’ rigid posture.

"You... you set me up!" Eleanor screamed, her face twisting into an ugly, unrecognizable mask of pure rage as she lunged toward me, her manicured fingers clawing at the air. "You scheming, wretched little whore! You turned my son against me!"

Before she could take two steps, Officer Davis and Officer Jenkins intercepted her, grabbing her wrists with practiced, mechanical efficiency and forcing her arms behind her back. The sharp, metallic clink of steel handcuffs ratcheting shut echoed through the living room like a church bell chiming the end of a nightmare.

"Eleanor Vance," Detective Evans said, stepping forward and pulling a Miranda rights card from her suit pocket. "You are under arrest for attempted murder in the second degree, child endangerment, identity theft, prescription fraud, and obstruction of justice."

"Julian! Do something!" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing violently against the officers’ grips as they began to pull her toward the front door. Her heavy gold necklace snapped in the struggle, sending dozens of tiny golden beads clattering across the hardwood floor like dropped coins. "I am your mother! I gave you life! You cannot let them take me to jail like a common criminal!"

Julian walked toward her, stopping just two feet away from where the officers were holding her struggling body. He looked directly into her frantic, tear-filled eyes, his own face remarkably calm and steady.

"You aren't a mother," Julian said, his voice carrying clearly over her desperate screaming. "A real mother protects children; she doesn't poison them to win a competition. You are going to prison, Eleanor. And as long as I have breath in my lungs, you will never see me, Clara, or my son ever again. You are dead to this family."

May you like

"Julian! Julian!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a ragged, guttural wail as the officers dragged her out the front door and down the porch steps toward the waiting police cruisers.

We stood together in the doorway, watching as the flashing red and blue lights of the police cars illuminated the quiet suburban street. As the back door of the cruiser slammed shut, trapping Eleanor Vance inside the caged backseat of a patrol car, Julian collapsed against my shoulder, burying his face in my neck as the heavy, silent tears finally fell. I wrapped my arms around him, holding him tight as the police sirens wailed into the distance, carrying the darkness out of our lives for good.
