Chapter 9 - The Final Boundary

I watched through the sheer curtains of the living room window as two officers approached the porch.

Helen turned around, her face pale with shock. "Officers, there is a misunderstanding. This is my son's house. I'm just here to drop off gifts for my grandchildren."

The lead officer, a tall, imposing woman, didn't smile. "Ma'am, we have a formal trespass warning on file for this address in your name. You were legally notified that you are not permitted on this property."

"But I'm their grandmother!" Helen shrieked, clutching the gift basket. "They can't keep me from my family!"

"Ma'am, I need you to set the basket down and step off the porch," the officer commanded, her hand resting near her utility belt. "If you do not comply, you will be placed under arrest for trespassing and harassment."

Helen looked at the door, then at the officers. For the first time in her life, her manipulation, her tears, and her titles meant absolutely nothing. The law did not care about her ego.

"David!" she screamed toward the house, a chilling, guttural sound of absolute defeat. "How could you do this to your own mother?!"

David stood silently in the hallway, his face unreadable. He didn't flinch.

Helen slowly set the basket on the wet porch. Defeated, humiliated, and broken, she walked down the driveway, escorted by the police officers. They watched her get into her car and followed her down the street until her taillights disappeared into the rain.

David walked over to the front door, opened it, picked up the gift basket, and walked directly to the outdoor trash can. He dropped it in, closed the lid, and locked the door behind him.

The siege was over. The boundary had been tested and had held firm as iron.

We walked back into the living room. Ethan and Noah were sitting on the rug, playing with building blocks. They hadn't even noticed the drama outside. They were safe in their fortress, entirely protected from the monster who had tried to break them.

David sat down on the floor next to them, pulling both boys into a massive hug. I joined them, resting my head against David's shoulder. The storm had finally passed.
