Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Century

The trial of State v. Eleanor Vance became a local media sensation. The press dubbed it the "Hospital Horror." The courtroom was packed every single day.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, completely healed, my skin glowing with health. I watched as the prosecution dismantled my family piece by piece.

When Julian was called to the stand, he looked like a ghost. He was wearing a cheap suit he had clearly bought off a discount rack. He testified that Eleanor had been planning to force me to sign the papers for weeks. He admitted that they had discussed "doing whatever it takes" because they believed I wouldn't survive the week anyway.

But the true killing blow came on day three.

The prosecution dimmed the courtroom lights. The large monitors facing the jury flared to life.

It was the VIP security footage.

The courtroom sat in dead, horrifying silence as the video played. The high-definition audio picked up every word. “Julian needs the seed money for his new tech startup.” “Because Julian has never built a life that required one.” “Do not be selfish.”

The jury watched as my mother ripped the heavy machine from the wall. They heard my scream. They saw Arthur calmly step in front of the door. They saw Julian back away, worried about getting blood on his designer jacket.

Several jurors covered their mouths. One woman in the back row began to weep quietly.

When the video ended, the lights came back on. The silence was heavier than concrete. Eleanor was sobbing into her hands. Arthur was staring blankly at the floor.

The defense didn't even try to cross-examine me. There was nothing to say.

The jury deliberated for exactly forty-five minutes.
