Chapter 6 - The Secret Witness

The criminal case was building rapid momentum, but the federal prosecutor wanted one final, airtight piece of evidence before taking the case before a grand jury: the medical trail. To prove the charge of domestic poisoning, they needed to establish exactly where Julian obtained the restricted Schedule IV narcotics he had used to dose my drinks.
The breakthrough came from an unexpected source.
On a Tuesday afternoon, while I was organizing Lily’s schoolbooks, my doorbell rang. Standing on my porch was a nervous-looking man in a crumpled brown suit, holding a worn manila envelope. I recognized him instantly from our country club dinners—Dr. Robert Chen, a private concierge physician who catered to the city's wealthy elite.
"Mrs. Vance," he said, his voice shaking. "May I come in? I don't have much time before my lawyers tell me to stop talking."
I let him into the kitchen, keeping Marcus on speakerphone on the counter. Dr. Chen sat down, looking exhausted and profoundly guilty.
"Julian came to me eight months ago," Dr. Chen confessed, staring down at his hands. "He told me you were suffering from severe, treatment-resistant insomnia and early-onset bipolar disorder. He said you were refusing to see a psychiatrist because of the social stigma, and he begged me to write an off-label prescription for a liquid sedative he could mix into your tea to help you sleep."
"And you just handed over controlled substances without examining the patient?" Marcus’s voice crackled through the phone, sharp as a razor. "That's a career-ending medical malpractice violation, Doctor."
"I know! I know," Dr. Chen said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "But Julian knew about a bad real estate investment I made three years ago. He had bought up the debt on my medical building through a shell company. He told me if I didn't write the prescriptions under a fictitious patient name, he would foreclose on my clinic and ruin my practice within thirty days."
He pushed the manila envelope across the table toward me.
"These are my original prescription logs, along with the audio recordings Julian left on my voicemail demanding higher dosages when he said you weren't acting 'erratic enough' for the court evaluators," Dr. Chen said, his eyes filling with tears. "I’m handing my medical license over to the state board tomorrow morning, and I’ve already agreed to act as a cooperating witness for the federal prosecution. I am so sorry, Elena. I let him use my prescription pad as a weapon against you."

I looked at the documentation. The dates matched perfectly with the days I had felt the most disoriented, the mornings I had couldn't get out of bed to drive Lily to school.
Every piece of the puzzle was finally locked into place. Julian had no leverage left, no allies remaining, and no shadows left to hide in.
