Chapter 3 - The Arrest of a Monster

The bedroom doorway flooded with tactical vests, helmets, and leveled firearms. Five officers swarmed into the master suite with terrifying military precision, their flashlights blinding as the beams cut through the gloom.
“Drop to the floor! Show me your hands! Now!” a burly sergeant bellowed, his weapon pointed directly at Marcus’s chest.
Chloe didn't hesitate. She collapsed onto her knees near the dresser, sobbing hysterically with her hands clamped behind her head. “I didn't know! I swear I didn't know he actually gave it to them! He told me it was just a sleeping draft so we could leave without a fight!”
Marcus, however, stood frozen in the doorway of the closet for two agonizing seconds. His mind—trained to find loopholes, to manipulate juries, to control every narrative—was scrambling frantically for an angle. He slowly raised his hands above his head, shifting his facial expression from feral rage into a mask of confused, innocent panic.
“Officers, thank God you’re here!” Marcus exclaimed, his voice smooth and urgent. “My wife has suffered some kind of psychotic break! She poisoned our dinner! I was trying to get her phone to call an ambulance! Please, my daughter needs medical attention immediately!”
I wanted to scream, to call him a liar, but my vocal cords were seizing. A cold numbness was creeping up my neck, choking off my breath. I sagged against the wall, clutching Lily, whose little head had rolled back against my arm, her skin burning hot while her lips turned a frightening, cyanotic shade of purple.
“Shut up and get on the ground!” the sergeant barked, unimpressed by the courtroom theatrics. Two officers lunged forward, grabbing Marcus by his wrists and kicking his legs out from under him. He hit the carpet hard, the air rushing out of his lungs in a ragged grunt as cold steel handcuffs ratcheted tightly around his wrists.
“This is an illegal seizure!” Marcus shouted into the carpet as an officer pressed a knee firmly between his shoulder blades. “I am a senior partner at Thorne & Associates! You are violating my constitutional rights! My wife is the one who administered the toxin!”
“Save it for the judge, counselor,” the officer growled, pulling him up to his feet and shoving him toward the hallway.
As they dragged him past the closet, Marcus turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine one last time. There was no panic left in them now—only a deep, toxic promise of retribution. He mouthed two words to me before the officers jerked him out of the room: You’re dead.
The moment he was gone, the tactical perimeter shifted into a rescue operation. Two paramedics in navy blue jumpsuits pushed past the remaining police officers, carrying heavy trauma bags and portable oxygen tanks directly into the closet.
“Ma'am, I’m Paramedic Davis,” a young woman said, her voice calm and anchoring as she dropped to her knees beside us. She gently took Lily from my arms, laying the child flat on the carpet while her partner immediately secured a pediatric oxygen mask over my daughter’s face. “What did you ingest? When did the symptoms start?”

“Aconite... monkshood,” I managed to rasp out, my tongue feeling like a lead weight in my mouth. “Beef stew... red wine... forty minutes ago.”
“We have an aconitine poisoning!” Davis shouted over her shoulder to the hallway. “Get the charcoal slurry ready and prep two IV lines! We need immediate transport to St. Jude’s Medical Center—level one trauma! Move, move, move!”
