Chapter 10 - The Armor
The annual Winter Charity Gala returned, exactly one year after I had humiliated Marcus and Chloe on the very same ballroom floor.
This time, I wasn't arriving as a scorned woman seeking vengeance. I was arriving as the most powerful real estate mogul in the state, the primary sponsor of the event, and the guest of honor.
My limousine pulled up to the red carpet. The flash of paparazzi cameras illuminated the night, a strobe light of validation and awe.
I stepped out of the car.
I wasn't wearing black. I wasn't wearing red.
I was wearing the Alexander McQueen.
The deep emerald silk wrapped around me perfectly, the hand-sewn gold embroidery flashing like liquid fire under the camera lights. The dress that had been stolen, tainted, and recovered now fit me flawlessly. I had reclaimed it, just as I had reclaimed my life.
The crowd parted as I walked up the grand staircase. Whispers followed me, but they weren't whispers of pity or scandal. They were whispers of admiration, of fear, of respect.
"Eleanor Vance," a reporter called out, shoving a microphone near my path. "You've had an incredible year. Taking over the company, the massive waterfront deal. What is your secret to surviving such a tumultuous transition?"
I stopped on the top step, turning to face the cameras. I felt the heavy, luxurious weight of the silk against my skin. I thought of my mother, sitting in her corner office, teaching me that the world only respects the power you are willing to wield. I thought of Marcus, sitting in a concrete cell, realizing too late that he had bet against the house.
I smiled, a cool, untouchable expression.

I turned and walked into the ballroom. The doors closed behind me, leaving the ghosts outside in the cold, while I stepped fully into the light.
