Chapter 7 - The Checkmate

Friday night. The Thorne Global technology summit in Manhattan.
The venue was ten times the size of Richard's charity gala. Giant LED screens displayed the Apex Core logo. The room was filled with the most powerful tech and real estate moguls in the world.
I stood backstage, adjusting the microphone headset over my ear. Marcus squeezed my shoulder. "Ready to change the industry, Claire?"
"I'm ready to take out the trash, Marcus," I replied.
I walked onto the stage to thunderous applause. I wore a sleek white pantsuit, a stark contrast to the dull gray dress from a month ago. I spoke about the future of automated architecture, the efficiency of the supply chain, and the power of innovation.
In the back of the room, standing near the exit, I spotted him. Richard. He had sneaked in using a fake press pass. He was smirking, waiting for the moment I booted up the software, waiting for the system to crash and burn in front of the world.
"Now," I announced to the crowd, "I'd like to run a live simulation."
I tapped my tablet. The massive screens behind me lit up.
But instead of the software interface, the screen displayed a split video. On the left, security footage of Greg, the junior developer, uploading the malware. On the right, a digital trail tracing the encrypted wire transfer that paid Greg $50,000. The source of the transfer? Sterling Architecture's emergency reserve account.
The crowd gasped. Camera flashes erupted.
Richard’s smirk vanished, replaced by sheer horror.
"Innovation is vital," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing like thunder. "But so is integrity. What you see behind me is a failed attempt at corporate sabotage, orchestrated by a dying firm desperately trying to destroy what they could never build."

I locked eyes with Richard across the sea of people.
"Security," I commanded smoothly. "Please escort Mr. Sterling into the custody of the FBI agents waiting in the lobby. I believe they have a warrant for cyber-terrorism and corporate espionage."
