Chapter 1 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The silence inside our stripped living room was deafening, broken only by the heavy, authoritative footsteps of the federal marshals advancing toward my husband. Richard stood paralyzed on the bare hardwood floor, the designer sunglasses slipping from his hair to bridge his nose, casting dark shadows over his suddenly pale, terrified eyes. He looked at me, searching my face for the familiar, submissive wife he had left behind two weeks ago. Instead, he found a woman carved out of ice.
"Elena, tell them to get out! What kind of sick joke is this?" Richard shouted, his voice cracking with a frantic edge as he tried to pull his arm away from the marshal's iron grip. "I am the CEO of Sterling Financial! You cannot just barge into my private residence without—"
"Mr. Sterling, save it for the magistrate," the man in the charcoal suit interrupted, holding up the thick leather binder. "I am Special Agent Miller with the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division. We have a federal warrant for your arrest on twenty-two counts of wire fraud, international money laundering, and the systematic embezzlement of corporate pension funds. Put your hands behind your back."
The metallic click of the handcuffs echoing off the empty walls was the sweetest sound I had heard in fourteen days.
While Richard was drinking top-shelf tequila in Cabo San Lucas, ignoring the phone calls that would have told him our son’s organs were failing, I had not spent my days weeping in the dark. After I buried my little boy in the freezing sleet, I drove straight to Richard’s private home office. I took a crowbar to his locked mahogany desk. I found the hidden encrypted flash drives, the offshore banking ledgers from the Cayman Islands, and the dummy corporations he had set up in my name.
For years, I had suspected he was hiding money, but the sheer scale of his theft was breathtaking. He had stripped millions from his own employees' retirement accounts to fund his lavish lifestyle, his luxury cars, and his tropical getaways with women half his age. I spent three sleepless nights compiling every digital trail, every illicit transfer, and every forged signature. Then, I walked into the federal building downtown and handed them the entire package on a silver platter.

"Elena! Do something!" Richard screamed as the marshals forced his wrists into the steel cuffs. "Call my lawyer! Call Harrison right now!"
I stepped out from the shadows of the hallway, crossing my arms over my black sweater. I looked him dead in the eye, feeling an eerie, absolute calm wash over my soul. "Why would I call anyone for you, Richard? You're on a digital detox. Remember?"
