Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of the Shop

We didn't drive back to my father’s small residential house on the edge of the city. With Toby’s safety being our absolute priority, and knowing that Eleanor would immediately dispatch her lawyers or private investigators to Dad’s home address by morning, my father made a tactical decision: we drove directly to his commercial automotive and structural engineering shop on the industrial South Side of Chicago.

Vance Automotive & Structural Diagnostics was a sprawling, twenty-thousand-square-foot brick and steel fortress that my father had owned free and clear for thirty-five years. Situated inside a secure, gated industrial compound with twelve-foot razor-wire fences, thirty-two high-definition surveillance cameras, and a private second-floor living loft where Dad often stayed during major winter repair contracts, it was the safest place in the city.

We arrived at midnight. My father used his remote to open the heavy steel security gates, drove the F-250 inside the heated main garage bay, and locked the steel blast doors behind us.

I carried a sleeping Toby up the metal staircase to the second-floor residential loft. The loft was warm, impeccably clean, and smelled faintly of cedarwood, coffee, and my father’s laundry soap. I tucked Toby into the heavy double bed in the spare room, kissed his forehead, and locked the door behind me.

When I walked back down to the main shop floor, my father was sitting at his large metal desk under the bright fluorescent shop lights. He had a pot of black coffee brewing, his reading glasses back on his nose, and the three leather corporate ledgers I had taken from Julian’s safe spread wide open across his workbench.

"You should get some sleep, Nora," Dad said without looking up from the numbers. "It’s been a rough night."

"I can't sleep, Dad," I said, pulling up a metal stool and sitting beside him. I poured two mugs of coffee, handing him one. "Why did you want those specific ledgers? I just took them because I knew Julian was terrified of me seeing them."

My father took a sip of his coffee, his sharp, analytical eyes scanning a page of highlighted transaction routing numbers. A slow, grim smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"When I built that estate for Julian three years ago, I noticed something strange about how his commercial real estate firm was issuing the milestone payments," Dad explained, pointing his calloused finger at a column of figures. "He wasn't drawing the construction funds from his domestic business accounts at Continental Bank. He was paying my subcontractors using cashier's checks drawn from an intermediary shell company registered in Delaware, named Apex Commercial Consulting."

My heart skipped a beat. I recognized that name. "Apex Consulting? Julian told me that was an independent property management vendor he hired to manage his downtown office buildings."

"It’s not an independent vendor, Nora," my father said coldly, turning the ledger around so I could see the incorporation documents Julian had hidden in his vault. "Look at the primary registered nominee director and the beneficiary signatory on the account."

I looked down at the paper. Printed in clear, black ink across the Delaware registration filing was a name that made my blood run ice-cold: Chloe Mercer.

"His mistress," I whispered, the room spinning slightly around me. "He didn't just meet her recently... this filing is dated two and a half years ago."

"That’s right," my father said, closing the ledger with a heavy thud. "Julian hasn't just been cheating on you in your marriage, Nora. He’s been systematically embezzling corporate funds from his investors and his family’s primary trust fund for nearly three years, washing over three million dollars through his mistress’s shell company to hide it from your marital assets and the IRS."

My father looked at me, his eyes burning with formidable, protective intensity. "Julian and his mother thought they could throw you out into the sleet and leave you with nothing. They didn't realize you just walked out of their house holding the exact evidence that will put both of them in a federal penitentiary."
