Chapter 10 - The Legacy

One year later.
The Sterling Estate was alive with the sound of laughter and running feet. Mia, now nearly two years old, was a tiny terror, sprinting across the manicured lawns with Grandfather’s golden retrievers chasing happily behind her.
I sat on the wraparound porch, sipping iced tea, watching Grandfather—the terrifying, ruthless billionaire—sitting on the grass in a tailored suit, letting Mia put a plastic tiara on his head.
“He spoils her rotten, you know,” Julian said, walking out onto the porch and handing me a plate of fresh fruit.
“He’s making up for lost time,” I replied, leaning into Julian’s chest as he sat beside me. “He thought he’d never have a family that loved him for him, rather than his money. Mia doesn't care about his bank account. She just knows he sneaks her cookies before dinner.”
Julian chuckled, kissing the top of my head.
Beatrice was a fading memory. She was currently serving her sentence in a minimum-security facility in another state. We didn't visit. She didn't call. The toxicity had been surgically removed from our lives, leaving only room for growth.
My foundation had helped over five hundred military families in its first year alone. We had stopped evictions, exposed predatory lenders, and provided formula and diapers to mothers who had been left behind.
I placed my hand over my stomach. Beneath my palm, a tiny flutter of movement reminded me that our family was still growing.
“Have you told him yet?” Julian asked softly, placing his hand over mine.
“I’m waiting for the right moment,” I smiled.
Just then, Grandfather walked up the porch steps, carrying a giggling Mia. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were brighter than I had ever seen them.
“Winston,” I said, standing up. “I think we’re going to need to clear out one of the guest rooms down the hall.”
Grandfather paused, looking from my hand on my stomach up to my face. The absolute authority that usually masked his features melted into pure, unadulterated joy.
“Another one?” he whispered, his voice cracking slightly.
“A boy this time,” Julian beamed, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
Grandfather looked out over his vast estate, his empire of stone and glass, and then back at the three of us.

“I spent my entire life building wealth,” Grandfather said, pulling us into a rare, fierce embrace. “But it wasn't until you walked back into this house, Lily, that I realized I was entirely bankrupt. You brought the true treasure to this family.”
As the sun set over the estate, casting a warm, golden glow over the lawns, I held my husband's hand. I wasn't the scared girl with the EBT card anymore. I was a mother, a wife, a fighter, and the matriarch of a new legacy. And nobody would ever take it from me again.
