Chapter 13 - Julian’s Defection

At 3:00 AM on Monday morning, three hours before the scheduled federal raid, Julian Vance walked into the lobby of the FBI regional headquarters in Seattle. He was alone, shivering in the cool morning air, holding a manila envelope containing his personal corporate records.

When Marcus and I arrived at the command center to gear up for the raid, we found Julian sitting in an interrogation room with Special Agent Vance and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Henderson. Julian had completely broken under the psychological pressure of his sister’s airport arrest, the frozen bank accounts, and the realization that his father had just attempted to hire hitmen to assault an active-duty Marine.

"I want to make a deal," Julian wept, his head resting on the stainless-steel table. "I’ll tell you everything. I’ll testify against my dad, my mom, Harrison—everyone. Just please don't put me in a maximum-security prison. I won't survive."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Henderson looked over at me as I entered the room in my tactical field uniform, my vest emblazoned with DCIS / MARINE CORPS LIAISON. Julian looked up, saw me standing there with my weapon holstered and my face set like granite, and fresh tears spilled down his cheeks.

"Elena... God, I’m so sorry," Julian choked out. "My dad is a monster. He told Harrison tonight that if the hired guys didn't get the hard drives from you, he was going to take his private jet to Mexico before the banks opened. He’s leaving us all behind to take the fall!"

"He’s not going anywhere, Julian," I said coldly. "His tail number was flagged by the FAA on Saturday night. If his pilot even attempts to start the engines at Boeing Field, tactical units will block the runway."

Henderson slid a formal Proffer Agreement across the table toward Julian. "Mr. Vance, if you want a reduced sentencing recommendation for your role in signing the fraudulent import certificates, you sign this proffer right now. You waive your right to silence, you agree to wear a wired recording device if necessary, and you take the witness stand for the prosecution at the federal trial."

Julian picked up the pen with trembling fingers and signed his name without reading the clauses. "I’ll do it. I’ll tell the jury everything about how Dad bribed the military inspectors and how Mom hid the money in the Swiss trusts. Just keep me away from him."

I watched my husband trade his family for a reduced prison sentence with zero emotion. Two days ago, he had told me I shouldn't have provoked his father's temper. Today, he was handing his father over to a federal executioner to save his own skin.
