Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Showdown

The trial lasted less than a week, mainly because they had absolutely no defense. The paper trail was too damning.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a sharp black suit. Claire sat on the opposite side of the courtroom, refusing to look at me. She had filed for bankruptcy the week before.
When Eleanor took the stand, her lawyer tried to paint her as a clueless housewife who had no idea what her husband was doing. She cried beautifully, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
"I trusted him," Eleanor wept to the jury. "I didn't know he was taking my grandson's money. If I had known, I would have stopped him. I love my grandson."
Then, the prosecutor stood up. He walked to the projector and displayed an email chain between my mother and father.
Date: November 12th. Richard: "I need another 50k from the kid's account to cover the margin call. Transfer it." Eleanor: "Fine. But take 60k. I need to pay the jeweler for my tennis bracelet, and I'm not using my own money for it. The kid won't need it for ten years anyway."
The courtroom erupted into whispers. My mother's face turned completely white. Her fake tears instantly dried up.

I watched as the jury's faces hardened with disgust. They didn't see a wealthy socialite anymore. They saw a monster who stole from a grieving widow and a fatherless child.
Richard didn't even testify. He sat at the defense table, staring blankly at the wood grain, realizing his life was entirely over.
