Chapter 7 - Viral Justice

Two months later, my life was unrecognizable. I had my own corner office with a view of the city skyline. I was leading a multi-million-dollar merger, and my bank account had numbers in it I used to only dream about.

But the internet never forgets.

Chloe's vlog from my graduation day had indeed gone viral, but it had morphed into a massive online scandal. Internet sleuths had enhanced the audio in the background of her video. They clearly heard Richard yelling, "You’re nothing but a lowly clerk! Do not humiliate us... Go wait by the subway!" followed by the sound of a physical shove.

The backlash was biblical. 'Cancel culture' had set its sights on the Vance family. Chloe's lifestyle brand was obliterated; she was kicked out of her influencer collective. My stepmother was uninvited from her prestigious charity boards.

But the worst hit was Richard's firm. Real estate relies heavily on public image and trust. Nobody wanted to buy a home from a man caught on tape verbally and physically abusing his daughter on her graduation day.

I sat at my mahogany desk, sipping a latte, when my intercom buzzed.

"Ms. Vance?" my assistant, Sarah, said. "There's a Richard Vance here to see you. He doesn't have an appointment, and security is asking if they should escort him out."

I leaned back in my leather chair, a slow smile spreading across my face.

"No, Sarah," I said. "Send him in. Let him wait in the lobby for exactly forty-five minutes, and then send him in."
