Chapter 6 - The Setup

Desperation makes people stupid, and Diego was the most desperate man in Miami.
With the $50,000 Marcus had given him, Diego thought he could flee to Mexico and start over. But Marcus’s men were tracking his every move. When Diego arrived at the private airstrip to charter a flight, he was intercepted by two men in dark suits.
"Mr. Vargas. Mr. Thorne would like a word," one of the men said, flashing a weapon beneath his jacket.
Diego was shoved into the back of a black Town Car, where Marcus was waiting in the shadows.
"Please," Diego begged, sweating through his shirt. "I signed the papers! I left her alone! Let me go!"
"You stood in a hallway and listened to my daughter bleed," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "You don't get to run, Diego. You are going to take this envelope, and you are going to go back to your mother's house. Inside is the recovered flash drive of the hotel security footage."
Diego stared at the envelope like it was a bomb. "Why are you giving this to me?"

"Because," Marcus leaned in, "if I hand it to the police, you go to prison as an accomplice. But if you hand it to the police and testify against your mother, claiming you were terrified of her and tried to stop her, the District Attorney might just give you a plea deal for probation."
Marcus was forcing a son to betray his mother to save his own skin. It was diabolical. And it was brilliant.
