Chapter 1 - The Thirty-Day Notice

“This is my house, Valerie. And you have exactly thirty days to get the hell out of it.”

My voice didn't shake. It didn't waver. It rang through the dining room with the absolute clarity of a woman who had finally woken up.

Valerie stared at the county-stamped envelope, her perfectly glossed lips parted in shock. She reached out with a trembling hand and pulled the heavy parchment from inside.

It was a legally binding, court-approved Notice of Eviction, accompanied by a certified deed proving that the house, the land, and everything on it was in an irrevocable trust. A trust that named me—and only me—as the sole executor.

“What is this?” Mark finally stammered, his face draining of color as he looked over his wife’s shoulder. “Mom, what are you doing?”

“I am taking out the trash, Mark,” I said, looking my son dead in the eye. “I heard your wife on the phone on Tuesday. I heard her plotting to declare me mentally incompetent so you could steal this house and throw me into a facility.”

The guests gasped. One of the church committee women actually dropped her fork. It clattered loudly against the fine china.

“That’s a lie!” Valerie shrieked, her sweet, practiced facade crumbling into sheer panic. “She’s delusional! Mark, tell them she’s crazy!”

“I am sharper than I have been in thirty years,” I replied smoothly. “And I am sharp enough to know that you don't get to eat the food I cooked, at the table I bought, in the house my husband paid for, while plotting my demise. To everyone else,” I turned to the frozen guests, “the lasagna is wonderful. But the party is over. Please see yourselves out.”

Nobody argued. The neighborhood women practically sprinted for the door, their eyes wide with the kind of gossip that would fuel the town for a decade. Valerie's colleagues awkwardly grabbed their coats, avoiding her gaze entirely.

Within three minutes, the dining room was empty, save for the three of us. The silence was deafening. The war had officially begun.
