Chapter 7 - The Confession in the Cold

The temperature inside the cabin was dropping rapidly with the front door completely destroyed.
We used heavy moving blankets from the hall closet to barricade the broken glass as best we could.
Peter managed to get a small fire started in the hearth, providing our only source of heat and light.
Arthur sat quietly in his chair, his arrogance slowly fading as the reality of his situation set in.
“You know, you can't hold me here forever,” Arthur said, trying to regain some semblance of control.
“If you let me walk away now, I’ll disappear, and you will never hear from me again.”
I laughed, a harsh and humorless sound that echoed in the dark, freezing room.
“You faked your own death, tried to steal my home, and planned to let me freeze to death.”
“You are not going anywhere except a federal prison, Arthur.”
Peter sat closer to the fire, shivering despite the thick blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
“How long were you two planning this?” Peter asked, his voice dead and hollow.
Arthur sighed heavily, clearly realizing that lying was no longer going to serve him.
“Almost a year,” he confessed, rubbing his bruised jaw.
“Nicole came to me for legal advice when your business started failing.”
“She discovered that the trust your father set up was worth nearly four million dollars.”
Peter gasped, his eyes widening in absolute shock.
“Four million? I thought it was just the cabin and a small life insurance policy.”
Arthur smiled weakly, shaking his head.
“Your father was a very wealthy man, Peter, but he didn't trust you to handle the money wisely.”
“He locked it away, naming your mother as the sole beneficiary until her death.”
The revelation hung heavily in the cold air, exposing the true depth of Nicole’s greed.
She hadn't just wanted to sell a family vacation home; she wanted to become a multi-millionaire overnight.
And my life was the only thing standing in her way.
I gripped the rifle tighter, feeling a surge of protective anger for my late husband.
He had known exactly who Nicole was, and he had tried to protect us from her.

“You underestimated us, Arthur,” I said quietly, staring into the flickering orange flames.
“And that is going to cost you everything.”
