Chapter 9 - The Transfer

I unlocked the vault door an hour later.
The heavy stone swung open, and the cold air of the wine cellar rushed in. Valerie didn't run. She walked up the spiral staircase slowly, like a woman walking to the gallows.
We went to my office—Arthur’s study, the one with the boxes marked DO NOT TOUCH. Inside was a secure desktop computer.
With David watching her every move, Valerie logged into the Vance Holdings offshore portal. Her hands shook violently over the keyboard. It took three attempts to get her password right.
She initiated the wire transfer. 1.2 million dollars.
I watched the confirmation screen load. I took a screenshot, printed a physical copy, and placed it in my pocket.
"It's done," Valerie whispered, her face hollow. "Cancel the email."
I logged into my encrypted server. With a single click, the scheduled send was deactivated.
"Get your things, Valerie," David said. He didn't look angry anymore. He just looked impossibly tired. "I'll drive you to a hotel in town. You can call your parents from there and tell them to cancel their flights."
Valerie didn't say a word. She walked out of the study, her footsteps heavy and dragging on the oak floors.
David lingered in the doorway. He looked at the boxes, at Arthur's old wingback chair I had set up in the corner.
"Did Dad really leave all this for you?" he asked quietly.
"He left me the truth, David," I said. "What I did with it was my choice."

He nodded slowly. "I'm sorry, Mom. For pushing you out of the house. For not seeing her for what she was."
"You see her now," I said, walking over and placing a hand on his cheek. "That's what matters."
