Chapter 5 - The Emergency Hearing

The family courthouse was freezing. I sat at the petitioner's table in my best thrift-store blazer, my court-appointed attorney, Sarah, beside me. Across the aisle, Marcus and Eleanor sat looking like a tragic, misunderstood Kennedy portrait.

They were petitioning for emergency full custody, claiming I had staged the burn to frame Eleanor. Vance Sterling stood before the judge, weaving a masterful tale of a desperate, poverty-stricken mother trying to extort a wealthy, upstanding family.

“Your Honor, Clara is mentally unstable,” Vance crooned. “We have character witnesses who will testify to her erratic behavior. She inflicted those burns on her own child to ruin my client's mother.”

The judge, a stern woman with zero patience, looked at Sarah. “Counsel, your response?”

Sarah stood up, plugging a flash drive into the court’s media system. “Your Honor, the defense claims my client is extorting them. We would like to enter Exhibit A into the record. An audio recording retrieved from a spy device placed inside the child's toy by the father himself.”

Marcus went rigidly still. Eleanor’s eyes widened.

Sarah pressed play. The courtroom speakers crackled, and Eleanor’s voice filled the room. “Bring her to the sink, Marcus... Do you want her to end up white trash like her mother?”

The silence in the courtroom was absolute. You could hear a pin drop. I looked at Marcus. The color had drained from his face entirely.

The judge banged her gavel so hard the wood splintered. “Emergency custody granted to the mother. Mr. Sterling, I suggest you advise your clients to prepare for criminal court, because I am revoking bail.”
