Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Graveyard

The cemetery was shrouded in thick, freezing fog. The headlights of Marcus's car cut through the gloom, illuminating rows of ancient headstones. We found Julian huddled against the marble monument marking my sister’s resting place. He was wearing stolen hospital scrubs, shivering violently, his skin practically translucent in the moonlight.

I threw my heavy coat over his shoulders. "Julian, you're going to freeze to death. Why did you come here?"

Julian looked up at me, his eyes hollow but burning with a frantic, desperate energy. "Because she knew, Claire. Elena knew everything. That’s why she died."

My breath hitched. "What?"

"Four years ago, before I went to rehab," Julian stammered, his teeth clicking together. "Elena found Arthur’s financial ledgers. Arthur wasn't a billionaire. His company was bankrupt. He was keeping the empire afloat by stealing from his clients, and he planned to drain my trust fund when I turned eighteen. Elena threatened to expose him."

I felt the ground tilt beneath my feet. The official police report stated Elena had died of an accidental overdose of sleeping pills—a tragedy that Arthur played up to the media for months, painting himself as the grieving, heartbroken husband.

"Arthur killed her," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "He murdered my sister."

"He poisoned her," Julian confirmed, tears freezing on his cheeks. "I saw him crushing the pills into her tea. But I was just a messed-up teenager addicted to painkillers. When I tried to tell the police, Arthur had me committed to a luxury psychiatric ward. Then, three months ago, he pulled me out, chained me in that basement, and started forging my signatures."

Marcus knelt beside us, pulling a voice recorder from his jacket. "Julian, we need proof. Testimonies won't be enough to take down a man as connected as Arthur. Did Elena hide the ledgers?"

Julian nodded weakly. "Yes. She gave me a key. A safety deposit box key. But I hid it... before Arthur locked me away."

"Where?" I demanded.

"In the one place Arthur would never, ever touch," Julian said. "Elena's old art studio."
