Chapter 3 - The War Room

Fifty miles north, deep within an off-the-books concrete bunker originally built for Cold War communications, my team was already assembled.

I didn't bring Maya to my apartment. I brought her to the "Ghost House"—a secure, heavily fortified safehouse used by Marine Recon units. Maya was currently sleeping in a quiet, windowless room, guarded by two combat-decorated female Marines who had volunteered for the detail the moment they heard what happened to my daughter.

I walked into the main command center. The walls were lined with monitors. Sitting at the central terminal was Master Sergeant David "Hacker" Collins, a cyber-warfare specialist who owed me his life after an ambush in Fallujah fifteen years ago.

"Talk to me, Collins," I said, pouring a cup of black coffee.

Collins cracked his knuckles, a wicked grin spreading across his scarred face. "Colonel, you were right. The Sterlings are arrogant, which means their digital security is sloppy. They rely on high-priced lawyers, not firewalls. I bypassed their corporate servers an hour ago."

"What did you find?"

"A gold mine of filth, ma'am," Collins said, bringing up a series of offshore bank statements on the main screen. "Julian Sterling's real estate development firm is a front. He’s been laundering money for a cartel operating out of Sinaloa. Over eighty million dollars washed through his luxury high-rise projects in the last three years."

I stared at the numbers, my expression completely flat. "And Eleanor?"

"Eleanor is the mastermind. She uses her 'charity foundation' to bribe state judges and local politicians. I have encrypted emails, wire transfer receipts, and recorded phone calls of her openly threatening a city councilman to rezone the waterfront."

Collins typed a few more keys. "Oh, and that hospital? The one that 'lost' Maya's medical records? Eleanor wired a quarter of a million dollars to an offshore account owned by the Chief of Medicine at 2:00 AM last night."

A cold, satisfying calm washed over me. The Sterlings had thought I was going to hire a family lawyer and fight them in a rigged divorce court. They thought we were playing a game of civil litigation.

"They wanted to destroy Maya's reputation," I said, sipping the bitter coffee.

"What are your orders, Colonel?" Collins asked, his fingers hovering over the keyboard.

"We don't go to the police," I said. "The local police are in Eleanor's pocket. We go nuclear. Collins, I want a complete financial blackout. Drain Julian's personal liquid assets and route them into an untraceable crypto wallet. Lock Pierce out of the corporate mainframe. And prepare a data packet for the FBI, the DEA, and the IRS."

"It'll be a bloodbath, ma'am."

"I know," I replied. "Let's make them bleed."
