Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Whispers

A week later, Marcus was back in the Frost Meridian offices, operating on a full night's sleep for the first time in months. The difference was staggering. He was sharper, faster, and the blueprints for Harbor Point were coming together brilliantly.

However, his sudden elevation in status did not go unnoticed.

During a Tuesday executive sync, Marcus presented the updated lobby schematics. The board members nodded in approval, save for Richard Sterling, the VP of Operations. Richard was a bitter, ambitious man who had always resented Evelyn’s rapid ascent to CEO.

"Brilliant work, Thorne," Richard drawled, leaning back in his leather chair. "It's amazing what a change of scenery can do for a man's productivity. How are you enjoying the Zenith penthouse?"

The room went dead silent. Marcus froze, the laser pointer heavy in his hand. Evelyn, sitting at the head of the table, slowly lowered her pen.

"I wasn't aware corporate housing allocations required a board vote, Richard," Evelyn said, her voice dropping the temperature in the room to absolute zero.

"They don't," Richard smirked. "But it is highly unusual to gift a premier executive asset to a mid-level architect. People are starting to wonder about the… nature of your investment, Evelyn. It looks like favoritism. Or worse."

Marcus felt a surge of hot anger. "My housing arrangement is part of a retention contract, Richard. If you have an issue with my work—"

"Quiet, Marcus," Evelyn interrupted softly. She didn't raise her voice, but the command was absolute. She stood up, walking slowly down the length of the table until she was standing directly behind Richard.

"Richard," Evelyn said, her voice a deadly whisper. "If you ever question my authority, my resource management, or the integrity of my team in this room again, I will personally see to it that you are managing a concrete plant in rural Idaho by Friday. Do we understand each other?"

Richard swallowed hard, the smirk vanishing. "Yes, Evelyn."

"Good." She walked back to her seat, her face impassive. "Meeting adjourned."
