Chapter 4 - The Extinction Burst

Psychologists call it an "extinction burst." When a toxic person realizes their normal methods of manipulation no longer work, they don't give up—they escalate. They throw everything at the wall to see what sticks.

It happened on day four.

At 2:15 AM, my phone buzzed with an alert from the front porch camera. I opened the app to see Tyler standing at my front door, swaying slightly, glaring directly into the lens.

Then, the pounding started.

"Mom! Open the door!" he screamed, rattling the heavy brass handle. "I know you're awake! Open the damn door!"

My heart hammered in my throat, muscle memory screaming at me to go down and pacify him before he woke the neighbors. But the new iron in my spine held me in place. I picked up my phone and dialed 911.

Outside, Tyler’s tone shifted from rage to pathetic pleading. "Mom, please. It's cold. Dad kicked me out of his hotel room. I have nowhere to go. I'm sorry, okay? I'm so sorry. Just let me in. I'll change."

Tears pricked my eyes. It was the little boy with the river stones begging me. But I looked at the healing bruise on my collarbone in the mirror. That wasn't a little boy out there. That was a dangerous man.

Five minutes later, red and blue lights flashed across my front lawn. I watched through the camera as two officers pinned a screaming, cursing Tyler against the brick veneer of my house, slapping cuffs on his wrists for violating the restraining order.

I didn't open the door. I didn't shed a tear.
