Chapter 10 - The Long Road Home

The aftermath was a blur of statements, lawyers, and international jurisdiction battles. Elena was extradited to the United States to face a mountain of charges: massive wire fraud, faking her own death, forgery, conspiracy, and the attempted kidnapping of our son. Without her money to buy lawyers, she was staring down multiple life sentences.

Richard didn’t survive the gunshot wound.

The false kidnapping charges against me were dropped immediately once Detective Vance presented the evidence. We were cleared. We were free.

Two weeks later, the spring sun was finally breaking through the winter gloom in our hometown. I was in the driveway, finishing the car wash I had started on that fateful day. The water sparkled on the hood of the sedan.

The front door opened, and Leo walked out. He looked different. The fear was gone from his eyes, replaced by a quiet, resilient strength. He carried two baseball mitts and a ball.

“Hey, Dad,” he said, tossing me a glove. “Want to play?”

I caught the mitt, a profound sense of peace washing over me. The ghost that had haunted our house, the shadow that had nearly consumed our lives, was finally gone. We had walked through the fire, and we had made it out the other side.

“You bet, buddy,” I said, turning off the hose. “I’ve got all the time in the world.”
