Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Ghosts

We reached Week 20. The halfway mark.

Elena’s hair had started to fall out from the brief round of chemo and the sheer stress her body was under. One evening, I sat on the edge of the bathtub, gently shaving the rest of her beautiful dark locks with an electric clipper.

When I finished, she looked at herself in the mirror. She was dangerously thin, bald, and bruised, with a round, protruding belly that looked entirely out of place on her fragile frame.

“I look like a monster,” she whispered.

I put down the clippers, wrapped my arms around her from behind, and kissed the top of her bare head. “You look like a warrior. You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”

That night, we lay in bed, the glow of the city streetlights filtering through the blinds. Elena was tracing lazy circles on her stomach.

“Daniel?” she asked quietly. “Why did you really leave?”

The question I had been dodging for months. But with death hovering in our periphery, there was no more room for lies.

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw everything I couldn't fix,” I admitted, my throat tight. “When we lost Leo… and then Maya…” I said the names of the babies we had lost, names we hadn't spoken aloud in years. “I felt like a failure as a man, as a husband. You were drowning in grief, and I didn't know how to save you. So I convinced myself that my presence was just a reminder of your pain. I thought you would be better off without me.”

Elena turned over, resting her hand on my chest, right over my heart.

“I was never better off without you,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “I just needed you to sit in the dark with me. You didn't have to fix it, Daniel. You just had to hold my hand while it hurt.”

“I’m holding it now,” I promised, intertwining my fingers with hers. “I’ll hold it in the dark. I’ll hold it in the light. Forever.”

The invisible wall that had stood between us for three years finally shattered, leaving nothing but the raw, desperate love that had brought us together in the first place.
