Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

Arthur froze, his grip on the stuffed bear tightening.

Evelyn stepped into the room, her gun perfectly steady.

She demanded that he hand over the toy immediately.

Arthur stared at the woman he had once loved with all his heart.

He asked her how she could have betrayed their family so easily.

Evelyn laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that chilled him to the bone.

She explained that she never wanted a family in the first place.

Arthur and Lily were just a convenient cover story to keep the authorities off her back.

Hearing this shattered the last remaining illusion Arthur held about his past.

He realized this monster had completely stolen five years of his daughter's life.

A sudden, fierce rage replaced his fear.

Arthur told her that she would have to kill him to get the drive.

Evelyn smiled cruelly and cocked the hammer of her pistol.

She said that was exactly what she planned to do.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the living room.

Max had climbed up the fire escape and thrown a heavy brick through the window.

The sudden noise startled Evelyn, making her flinch for a fraction of a second.

Arthur used that exact moment to swing the heavy steel pipe with all his might.

He struck Evelyn’s wrist, sending the silver pistol flying across the room.

She screamed in pain and fury, lunging at him with her bare hands.

Arthur shoved her backward into the wall, rushing out the door before she could recover.

He sprinted down the hallway, the adrenaline pumping furiously through his veins.

He heard Evelyn screaming at her men to kill him.

Gunshots erupted, the bullets tearing into the walls behind him as he dove down the stairwell.

He practically flew down the stairs, bursting out into the cold night air.

Max and Lily were waiting by the alleyway, their faces pale with panic.

Arthur grabbed them both, clutching the bear tightly as they ran back toward the underground.
