Chapter 1 - The Red File

The heavy oak door of Room 412 didn't just open; it was practically torn off its hinges.
Dr. Aris Thorne, the Chief of Obstetrics, burst into the room, his white coat billowing behind him. He was gasping for air, his face completely devoid of color. In his trembling hands, he clutched a thick manila folder stamped with a glaring, blood-red seal: RESTRICTED - LEGAL EYES ONLY.
"Dr. Thorne?" Elena’s voice was barely a whisper, but the panic in it was unmistakable. She instinctively reached out, trying to shield the twins still resting against my chest.
I didn't move. My instincts, honed by years of corporate warfare and surviving the ruthless underbelly of Chicago’s business elite, kicked in instantly. I shifted my body to block the doorway, positioning myself between the doctor and my family.
"Explain yourself, Thorne," I demanded, my voice dropping to a lethally calm register that made board members sweat. "Now."
"Mr. Mercer," Dr. Thorne panted, locking the door behind him with shaking fingers and throwing the deadbolt. "We don't have time. You have to take her and the children and leave. Through the freight elevator. Now."
He shoved the red-stamped file against my chest. I secured the babies in my left arm, letting them rest against my damp cashmere coat, and flipped the file open with my right hand.
The documents inside weren't medical charts. They were wire transfer receipts. Massive sums of offshore money—millions of dollars—routed through a series of shell companies. But it was the final page that made the blood freeze in my veins. It was a contract of adoption, pre-signed by a judge, entirely blank where the biological mother’s signature should be.
The buyer listed at the bottom? Victor Sterling.
Sterling. My fiercest rival. The CEO of Sterling Global, the man whose logistics empire I had ruthlessly dismantled and absorbed over the last three years.
"Sterling bought out the hospital’s board of directors," Dr. Thorne choked out, backing away from the door as heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor outside. "He paid them to alter Elena's admission records. Officially, she isn't here. Officially, these babies do not exist. He’s sending a private extraction team to take them, Julian. He's going to use your heirs to blackmail you for control of the Mercer Syndicate."
I looked down at Elena. Her eyes were wide with sheer terror. "Julian," she breathed, her voice cracking. "That’s why I hid. Seven months ago, a man broke into my apartment. He told me if I ever contacted you, you would be killed, and the babies would be taken. He showed me photos of you... of your security detail being tracked. I thought I was protecting you by disappearing."
My jaw clenched so hard my teeth ached. She hadn't left because she hated me. She had left to save my life. And I had spent the last eight months hating her for it.
The doorknob to Room 412 violently rattled.
"Open up!" a muffled, heavily accented voice shouted from the hallway. "Maintenance!"
"Hold them," I commanded, gently transferring the twins back into Elena’s arms.

I reached inside my coat and pulled out my encrypted satellite phone, hitting the single button that connected to my private security detail waiting in the subterranean parking garage.
"Vanguard Team," I spoke into the receiver, my voice cold, precise, and devoid of mercy. "We are at war. Breach the fourth floor. Lethal force authorized."
