Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the house finally felt like a home again.
The toxic, suffocating energy that had lingered for years was completely gone.
I walked into the kitchen and found my mother standing by the stove, humming a cheerful tune.
She was wearing a bright floral apron, carefully stirring a pot of her famous homemade chicken soup.
The physical burns on her chest had healed into faint, silver scars, and the light had returned to her beautiful eyes.
"Smells amazing, Mom," I said, kissing her softly on the cheek.
"Sit down, sweetheart, it's almost ready," she smiled, handing me a freshly baked dinner roll.
I sat at the kitchen island, opening my laptop to check the news.
Out of pure curiosity, I typed Rebecca's name into the search bar.
It was a guilty habit I indulged in maybe once a month.
Her life had spiraled exactly as I had predicted.
After she posted the forced retraction on Facebook, her social circle dropped her instantly.
Her prestigious real estate firm fired her due to the massive public backlash and breach of morality clauses.
The last I heard through the grapevine, she was working as a receptionist at a low-end used car dealership in the suburbs.
She had lost the luxury life she worshipped, all because she couldn't show basic human decency to an old woman.
Karma rarely misses when she takes aim.
I closed the laptop, letting go of the past completely.
"Soup is served!" my mother announced, placing a steaming bowl in front of me.
We sat together, eating and laughing about silly memories from my childhood.
I realized then that true wealth wasn't the big house or the fancy cars.
It was the peace of mind knowing the people you love are safe and protected.
My reality had fractured permanently that terrible afternoon, but sometimes things need to break so you can rebuild them stronger.
I looked at my mother, happy, healthy, and safe in her own home.

We had survived the storm.
And the rest of our lives was looking incredibly bright.
