Chapter 9 - The House of Cards Falls

The living room was transformed into a chaotic crime scene within minutes.
Paramedics were tending to Chloe’s bloody nose, while an officer tightly cuffed Derek’s hands behind his back.
Valerie, the fraudulent notary, was sitting on the sofa, sobbing and confessing everything to a detective.
She admitted Derek had promised her a twenty percent cut of the cabin's value once the loan was secured.
I sat at the kitchen island, a blanket draped over my shoulders, as the lead detective listened to the audio file on my phone.
The detective’s expression hardened as Derek’s arrogant voice filled the quiet kitchen.
"This is rock-solid, Mrs. Vance," the detective said, handing the phone back to me with a look of profound respect.
"Conspiracy to commit fraud, false imprisonment, assault... he won't be seeing the outside of a cell for a very long time."
Derek was being dragged out the front door, shouting obscenities and cursing my name.
I didn't even turn my head to look at him; he was already a ghost to me.
Marcus walked through the front door, flashing his retired attorney badge at the officers.
He hurried into the kitchen and wrapped me in a tight, comforting hug.
"You always were a terrifying woman, Eleanor," Marcus chuckled softly.
"I just do what needs to be done for my family," I replied, feeling the adrenaline finally begin to crash.
Chloe walked over, a bandage across her nose, but her eyes were clear and bright.
She looked at the empty house, the house that had almost become her prison.
"I have to sell this place, Mom. I can't stay here," she said quietly.
"We will call a realtor tomorrow," I promised her.
"But tonight, you are coming home with me."
May you like
The nightmare was finally ending, dismantled by a single recording and a mother's refusal to back down.
We walked out of the house together, leaving the flashing lights and the shattered remnants of Derek's lies behind us.
