Chapter 5 - Blood in the Vault

I didn't think; I just reacted. The survival instincts that had kept me alive on the streets kicked in.

I dove behind a massive marble pillar just as Richard opened fire. The deafening roar of gunshots echoed through the underground vault, shattering the glass partitions and sending the bank clerks screaming.

I pulled the Glock from my waistband. My hands were shaking, but I remembered the countless hours I had spent playing the part of a 'good husband,' fixing Eleanor's plumbing, repairing her roof, learning how things worked.

I aimed at the heavy fire suppression pipe running along the ceiling above Richard’s men and pulled the trigger.

BANG.

The pipe burst. Highly pressurized, blinding white chemical foam sprayed downward in a violent torrent, completely engulfing Richard and his guards. They shouted in confusion, blinded and slipping on the marble floor.

I didn't wait to see if I hit them. I sprinted toward the emergency exit stairwell, kicking the heavy door open and taking the concrete steps two at a time.

I burst out into the alleyway behind the bank, the canvas bag heavy with twelve million dollars cutting into my shoulder. I was a millionaire. But I was a dead man walking.

My burner phone vibrated.

"Did you really think it would be that easy, Julian?" the Volkov boss growled. "We have your sister. Pier 44. You have one hour, or we start sending pieces."
