Chapter 4 - The Fall from Grace

The silence that followed my declaration was absolute. It was the same silence that had followed Marcus slapping me, but this time, the power dynamic had completely inverted.

"You... you're lying," Beatrice stammered, her hand flying to her throat. "Marcus bought this house! He's a CEO!"

"Your son is a glorified fraud," Vance Sterling interjected smoothly, handing Marcus a stack of legal documents. "These are the incorporation papers for Aegis, listing Ms. Hayes as the sole proprietor. And these are the divorce filings. Oh, and this is the formal eviction mandate, signed by a judge at noon today."

Marcus looked at the papers, his eyes darting frantically over the legal jargon. The reality was crashing down on him like a collapsing building. All those years of belittling me, of telling me I was lucky to have him, when he had been living on my charity.

"Serena... baby, please," Marcus’s voice cracked. The rage was gone, replaced by a pathetic, whining desperation. "You can't do this. My business is collapsing. We're married! What's yours is mine!"

"Not when you signed that iron-clad prenuptial agreement," Vance reminded him cheerfully. "The one you didn't bother to have a lawyer read because you thought Serena was just a poor girl with no assets."

I checked my watch. "You have fifty-five minutes."

Beatrice began to hyperventilate. "My things! My jewelry! My art collection!"

"Leave the jewelry. Leave the art," I echoed her own words back to her, my tone laced with ice. "Those were purchased with Aegis funds. Pack the bargain-bin clothes you had before I came into your lives."

The next hour was a symphony of humiliation. Marcus and Beatrice frantically threw clothes into suitcases, crying and arguing with each other. Beatrice blamed Marcus for hitting me; Marcus blamed Beatrice for provoking me. The aristocratic facade had completely crumbled, revealing the desperate, greedy parasites they truly were.

At exactly 3:00 PM, my security guards escorted them out the front door. They stood on the driveway, holding three cheap suitcases, looking up at the mansion they had claimed as their own.

I stood on the porch, looking down at them.

"You’re a monster!" Beatrice spat.

"No, Beatrice," I replied softly. "I'm just the landlord. And your lease is up."
