Chapter 18 - Unspoken No More

The rooftop terrace of the Duca penthouse overlooked the sprawling, glittering skyline of Chicago. The autumn wind was crisp, carrying the scent of Lake Michigan through the night air.
After dinner, Marco led Lena out onto the private balcony, draping his heavy wool coat over her shoulders to ward off the chill. They stood side by side against the glass railing, watching the lights flicker below them like distant stars.
"My mother told me what she said to you in the conservatory," Marco said quietly, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "She told you that loving me means living on a battlefield."
Lena turned to look at his profile—the sharp jawline, the straight nose, the scars that told the story of a lifetime spent surviving. "She wasn't wrong."
Marco turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his. His grip was firm, yet desperately gentle. "I can't promise you an ordinary life, Lena. I can't promise you that there won't be threats, or that the dark won't try to creep back in. This empire was built on blood, and that is a debt I will pay until the day I die."
He stepped closer, closing the remaining space between them until she could feel the heat of his body radiating against the cold night air.
"But I swear to you on my life, on my family's name, and on every breath I have left," Marco whispered, his voice trembling with raw, unfiltered emotion, "I will stand between you and the dark forever. You will never be scared. You will never be alone."

Lena looked up into the eyes of the most feared man in Chicago, seeing not a monster, but a man who had finally found his heart.
"I'm not scared of the dark, Marco," she said softly, reaching up to cup his face in her hands. "Not as long as I'm with you."
