Chapter 3 - The Devil's Bargain

Mabel’s Diner smelled of burnt grease, strong coffee, and bleach. It was 11:45 PM, and Harper Evans was wiping down the laminate counter, her arms aching so badly she could barely feel her fingertips.
The bell above the door chimed.
"We're closed," Harper called out without looking up.
"I'm not here for the pie."
Harper’s spine stiffened. She slowly turned around.
Julian Sterling looked violently out of place in the rundown diner. He wore a charcoal overcoat over a tailored suit, his dark hair perfectly styled, his presence so commanding it seemed to suck the oxygen out of the room. Two massive security guards stood outside the glass doors, watching the street.
"You," Harper breathed, dropping the rag. "How did you find me?"
Julian didn't answer. He walked to the nearest booth and slid into the cracked vinyl seat. He reached into his coat and placed a thick, manila folder on the table.
"Sit down, Harper."
"I told you last night, Mr. Sterling. I'm not playing your sick billionaire games. Leave, or I'm calling the police."
"The surgery for your sister Lily is scheduled for November," Julian said calmly, his eyes locking onto hers. "It costs three hundred and forty-two thousand dollars. You currently have twelve thousand saved. If you don't secure the funds by the end of the month, the hospital will bump her from the donor list."
Harper stopped breathing. The blood drained from her face, leaving her chalk-white. She gripped the edge of the counter, her knuckles turning white. "How... how do you know about Lily?"
"I know everything," Julian said softly, gesturing to the seat across from him. "Sit."
This time, she obeyed. She slid into the booth, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Julian pushed the folder toward her. "Inside this folder is a legal contract. It stipulates a one-year marriage of convenience. In exchange, I will wire five million dollars into a trust for Lily by 8:00 AM tomorrow. I have already contacted the Chief of Cardiology at Mount Sinai. Lily will be moved to the VIP wing tonight, and her surgery will be fully funded and prioritized."
Harper stared at the folder as if it were a venomous snake. Tears of pure exhaustion and desperation welled in her eyes. "Why are you doing this? You could have any woman in the world."
"I don't need 'any woman,'" Julian replied, his voice devoid of emotion. "I need a woman who won't complicate my life with actual feelings. My previous fiancée just proved that love is a liability I cannot afford. My grandfather's will requires me to marry to keep my company. You need money to save your sister's life. This isn't a romance, Harper. It's a business merger."
Harper looked at the man across from her. He was devastatingly handsome, but his eyes were like two pieces of chipped ice. He was cold. Calculating. A machine.
But he was offering her Lily's life.
Harper reached out with a trembling hand and pulled a pen from her apron pocket. She didn't even read the terms. She flipped to the last page and signed her name with a vicious, desperate stroke.

"When is the wedding?" she whispered.
"Tomorrow morning," Julian said, taking the folder back. "Pack your things. You're moving into the penthouse."
