Chapter 10 - The New Heir

An hour later, the Vanguard Conservatory was empty of guests. The art was cordoned off as evidence. The flashing police lights outside had faded into the distance.

I stood alone on the outdoor terrace, the cool night air soothing the sting on my cheek. I held a glass of champagne, leaning against the stone balustrade, looking out over the glittering skyline of the city.

The heavy glass door opened behind me.

My father walked onto the terrace. He was a distinguished man, his hair touched with silver, his eyes carrying the same fierce intelligence that had guided this entire operation.

He walked up beside me and clinked his glass against mine.

"The Croft stock has officially flatlined," my father said softly. "The board of directors is resigning en masse. The federal prosecutor has enough evidence to lock Richard and Preston away for the rest of their natural lives. And the senator and the judge are drafting their resignation letters as we speak."

"We did it," I whispered, the reality finally sinking in.

"You did it, Serena," my father corrected, wrapping a warm, protective arm around my shoulders. "You took the hit. You held the room. You broke their minds before we even broke their bank accounts. Your grandfather would be incredibly proud of you tonight."

I leaned into my father’s embrace, looking out at the city.

For years, the Crofts had owned this skyline. They had ruled through fear, intimidation, and untouchable wealth. They had believed that money made them gods.

But they had forgotten the most important rule of power.

There is always someone smarter, someone more patient, and someone with a much deeper reason to fight.

I took a slow sip of the champagne. It tasted like victory.

The media would spend the next year dissecting the "Conservatory Trap." They would talk about the brilliance of the tactical lockdown, the sheer audacity of the art slash, and the spectacular downfall of a corrupt dynasty.

But as I stood there in my torn silk gown, staring at the city that now belonged to my family, I knew the real truth.

Preston Croft thought he was putting a nobody back in her place.

He just didn't realize my place was on the throne.
