Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the NY Apartment

Friday evening brought the arrival of the storm I knew was coming.
I had just finished serving Leo his favorite Friday night dinner—homemade pepperoni pizza—when the intercom on my kitchen wall buzzed. I didn't recognize the number on the caller ID display; it read simply Lobby Concierge Desk.
I picked up the receiver. "Hello?"
"Ms. Vance, this is Carlos at the front desk," the concierge said, his voice tense and low. "I have a young woman down here who claims to be your sister. She doesn't have a building pass, but she bypassed the outer vestibule when another resident walked out. She is currently refusing to leave the lobby and is making a significant disturbance."
My heart hammered against my ribs. Chloe had flown back to New York. She had come straight from the airport to my building.
"Carlos, do not let her into the elevator bank," I instructed immediately. "She is currently named as a respondent in an active Emergency Protective Order issued by the Orange County Superior Court, which has interstate validity. If she attempts to pass the security desk, call the NYPD immediately."
"Hannah! I know you can hear me!" I heard Chloe’s voice screaming in the background of the concierge's phone, distorted and hysterical. "Get down here right now! You ruined my life! The agency fired me this morning! They saw the arrest report on the background check database! Hannah!"
I looked into the living room. Leo had frozen with a slice of pizza halfway to his mouth, his wide eyes fixed on the intercom speaker. The sound of his aunt’s screaming had instantly brought back the terror of the theme park security office.
"Mommy?" he whispered, his lip trembling. "Is Aunt Chloe coming upstairs?"
I walked over, took the pizza slice from his hand, and sat him down on the sofa, kneeling in front of him so I filled his entire field of vision. "No, sweetie. She is not coming upstairs. Our building has security guards, and the police are coming right now to tell her she has to leave. You are completely safe here."
I stood up, walked into my bedroom, and grabbed my coat and my phone. I turned to Maya, who had just arrived ten minutes earlier to watch movies with us. "Lock the deadbolt behind me. Keep Leo in the bedroom with the television on loud. Do not open this door for anyone except me or a uniformed police officer."
"Where are you going?" Maya asked, alarmed. "Hannah, don't go down there alone!"
"I'm not fighting her, Maya," I said, checking my phone to ensure the voice recorder application was running. "I am going down there to hand the responding police officers the certified copies of the protection order so they can arrest her for violating it."
When the elevator doors opened into the lobby, the scene was absolute chaos. Chloe was sitting on the polished marble coffee table near the entrance, her luggage dumped on the floor, screaming at two building security guards who were standing between her and the elevator banks. Her hair was unwashed, her designer sweatpants were stained, and her eyes were wild with manic desperation.
"There she is!" Chloe shrieked the second she saw me, launching herself off the table.
The two security guards caught her immediately, grabbing her arms and holding her back as she thrashed against them.
"You bitch!" Chloe screamed, spit flying from her mouth as she struggled against the guards. "I lost my job! The marketing agency fired me for moral turpitude! My boyfriend dumped me because his family saw the mugshot online! You did this to me!"
I stood five feet away from her, my face entirely expressionless, holding the thick legal envelope containing the court orders. "I didn't fire you, Chloe. I didn't make your boyfriend leave you. And I didn't abandon a seven-year-old child in a shopping concourse for fifty minutes so I could drink margaritas."
"It was fifty minutes!" she wailed, dropping to her knees as the guards restrained her, her anger turning into manipulative, sobbing desperation. "He was fine! He was watching cartoons in an air-conditioned room! You're destroying your own flesh and blood over nothing! Mom is having heart palpitations! Dad can't sleep! Why are you doing this to us?"
"Because you think it was nothing," I said quietly, my voice cutting through her hysterics with absolute clarity. "Because even now, standing in my lobby after losing your job and your boyfriend, you still think what you did to my son was a joke. You still think you are the victim."
Outside the glass lobby doors, the flashing blue and red lights of an NYPD cruiser pulled up to the curb. Two uniformed officers walked through the revolving doors, their hands resting on their utility belts as they took in the scene.

I turned to the senior officer, holding out the legal envelope. "Officer, my name is Hannah Vance. This is my sister, Chloe Vance. She is currently violating an active interstate Emergency Protective Order issued by the State of California. Here are the certified documents and the bench warrant details."
Chloe’s screams as they placed her in handcuffs for the second time in five days echoed off the marble walls of the lobby, but I didn't look back. I stepped back into the elevator, pressed the button for my floor, and returned to my son.
