Chapter 1 - The Briefcase

Clara didn’t flinch, even as Julian Morreti’s dark, commanding presence seemed to suck the oxygen out of the penthouse.

"I am questioning your process, Mr. Morreti," Clara said, her voice echoing off the marble floor. "You are ready to destroy this young man's life over an envelope you assumed he took. But I didn't see anyone check your belongings."

Julian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. The security chief, Victor Thorne, took a threatening step forward, but Julian held up a single, raised finger. Victor froze.

"You want to search my belongings, Ms. Vance?" Julian’s voice was a low, terrifying purr.

"I want to eliminate all logical possibilities before calling the police on a twenty-year-old kid," Clara replied, pointing toward the heavy leather portfolio resting on the boardroom table. "Open it."

The corporate executives gasped. No one ordered Julian Morreti to do anything. But Julian stared at Clara, a strange, dark amusement flickering in his eyes. Without breaking eye contact with her, he reached out, unlatched the silver buckles of his portfolio, and flipped it open.

There, tucked neatly between a stack of acquisition contracts, was the thick, black envelope.

The silence that followed was deafening. Julian stared down at the seventy-five thousand dollars. His jaw clenched, the muscles ticking violently. He had made a mistake. A very public, very ugly mistake.

"Well," Clara said, breaking the silence with professional icy calm. "It seems the money wasn't stolen. It was misplaced. Leo, you are free to go back to your shift."

Leo scrambled to grab his meager belongings, tears of relief in his eyes. "Thank you, Ms. Vance. Thank you."

Julian didn't say a word. He slowly closed his briefcase. Clara didn't wait for him to speak. "If there are no further administrative issues, Mr. Morreti, I suggest you vacate the employee lounge. My staff has work to do."

She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving the most dangerous billionaire in Chicago staring at her retreating back.
