Chapter 2 - The Video Evidence

While Evelyn and my parents were discovering the reality of a canceled credit card in the resort’s dining room, corporate management at the Lakeside Grand Resort was conducting an internal review that would make their morning significantly worse.
The previous night, when I called the corporate guest relations hotline, I hadn't just complained about poor service; I had invoked specific legal terminology regarding child endangerment, premises liability, and gross negligence by their on-site staff. The corporate duty manager, a woman named Ms. Gallagher, had listened to my account with increasing horror, especially when I mentioned the porter who had witnessed Toby sobbing by the stairwell without intervening or contacting security.
At 9:30 AM, my phone rang with a private 800 number. It was Ms. Gallagher, accompanied by the resort’s General Manager and the head of campus security.
"Mrs. Vance," Ms. Gallagher began, her voice tight with professional gravity and sincere distress. "We have spent the last two hours reviewing the closed-circuit security footage for the fourth-floor East Wing corridor, timestamped between 1:15 PM and 4:30 PM yesterday afternoon. I want to extend our most profound, unreserved apologies to you and your son. What occurred on our property is inexcusable."
"Tell me what the cameras captured, Ms. Gallagher," I said, my voice level and devoid of emotion. I needed to hear the exact details confirmed by a third party before my attorney subpoenaed the files.
"The footage confirms that at 1:22 PM, your son stepped out of Suite 412 into the corridor, appearing to look for you toward the elevator bank," the General Manager explained. "At 1:24 PM, the door to Suite 412 closed from the inside. When your son returned thirty seconds later, the deadbolt had been engaged. For the next two hours and forty-eight minutes, the cameras recorded your son knocking on the door, calling out, and eventually sitting on the carpet by the emergency exit stairwell."
I closed my eyes, my hand gripping the edge of the table as a fresh wave of nausea hit me. "Did anyone open the door?"
"At 3:15 PM, the door opened approximately four inches," the security chief reported, his tone cold with disapproval. "A female individual matching the description of your sister, Evelyn Montgomery, appeared in the doorway. She spoke to your son for approximately twelve seconds, pointed toward the stairwell, and closed the door again, re-engaging the security latch. Furthermore, our records indicate that during this entire period, the occupants of Suite 412 placed two orders for room service and streamed a pay-per-view movie, confirming they were present and active within the suite."
"What about your staff?" I asked sharply. "A porter walked past him. Why wasn't security called immediately?"
"The porter in question has been suspended pending formal termination," the General Manager said immediately. "He failed to follow our mandatory protocol for unattended minors. Mrs. Vance, to ensure your safety and to maintain the standards of our resort, campus security is currently en route to Suite 412 and the adjoining rooms. We are revoking the occupancy licenses of your parents and your sister’s family immediately. They are being escorted off the premises as we speak."
"Thank you," I said simply. "My attorney will be in touch by the end of the business day to secure the authenticated video files for our records."

I hung up the phone just as Toby shuffled out of the bedroom, rubbing his eyes with his fists. He looked at me with a hesitant, sleepy smile. "Mommy? Are we going back to the big hotel today?"
"No, my sweet boy," I said, pulling him onto my lap and wrapping my arms entirely around his small frame. "We are staying right here by the lake, just you and me. Nobody is ever going to lock a door on you again."
