Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The aftermath was a blur of flashing sirens and federal debriefings.

The ledger Arthur Vance had secured contained the account numbers, routing information, and identities of every major player in the cartel's Midwest operation. By sunrise, the FBI had executed over forty raids across the country. The syndicate was entirely dismantled.

Evelyn was taken into federal custody, locked deep inside a supermax facility where she would never see the light of day again.

Two days later, I stood on the tarmac of a private airfield on the outskirts of Chicago.

The wind was biting, but the sky was clear and bright.

My father stood by the stairs of a small private jet. He was officially entering the Federal Witness Protection Program. He was getting a new face, a new name, and a one-way ticket to a secluded location.

"I'm sorry I missed so much, Elias," Arthur said, hugging me tightly. "I'm sorry I couldn't be the father you deserved."

"You kept us safe, Dad," I replied, pulling back and looking him in the eye. "That's exactly what a father is supposed to do."

He smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile, and climbed the stairs into the plane.

I watched the jet take off, disappearing into the vast blue sky.

When I turned around, a black SUV was waiting for me. Sarah was in the passenger seat, and the twins were strapped into the back, playing with their toys.

We didn't go back to the estate. We didn't go back to our old lives. The FBI had set us up with new identities in a quiet, coastal town in Oregon. It was a fresh start. No lies. No cartel shadows. Just us.

I climbed into the driver's seat, took Sarah's hand, and put the car in drive.

The nightmare was finally over. It was time to go home.
